An American Idol turns designer

When she won American Idol in 2007, Jordin Sparks was just 17, not even out of high school. But her voice, her stage presence and her style convinced America to vote her over the top.

Since then, she’s gone on tour with the show, released an album, had a day named in her honor in her hometown of Glendale, Ariz., won a Teen Choice Award, worked for National Geographic Kids to help battle malaria and been nominated for this year’s American Music Awards.  We don’t know where she’s found the time, but Sparks has also helped design a line of holiday dresses to be sold for Wet Seal.  (She’ll do casual clothes and accessories later.)

Jordin’s line, called “Sparks,” tends toward pretty, short dresses that are gathered at the waist, shaped at the bust and hips, and have little or no straps. Her version of the LBD shows itself off with a wide fuschia sash at the empire waist ($54.50, above right); a red dress with a sequin bow follows the same girly lines ($54.50, above left). Sparks goes asymmetrical with a plum-colored bubble dress ($49.50, above right), and goes cold shoulder with a cheetah print (she’s wearing it in the photo from People at the very top of the post, $29.50).

A few things show that Jordin’s growing up, right before our eyes. The purple and black metallic cross-back dress glitters with possibility ($29.50, above left), and her tulip-hem tube dress makes its statement at the waist ($29.50, above right).

And there’s even a dress you could wear to meet the boyfriend’s mom - her waist-tie Kabuki dress ($29.50, right) features soft fabric, small shiny accents and a hemline that’s a bit more modest.

A bit.
