Belts From Boho-Chic to Bling
Blogged under Costumes, Shoes and Accessories by Katherine Tanney on Tuesday 15 January 2008

connected-leather-belt-jon-wye.jpgAnd you thought it was the jeans that mattered. Or the dress. If you’ve ransacked your wardrobe (and your friends’ closets) too many times in search of that perfect belt, then you ought to add some new looks to your collection. Belts are fun. Yes, they help hold up your pants and bring shape to loose dresses, but they also say a lot about your personality, not to mention enhance your curves or disguise your lack thereof. Jon Wye makes his belts in the USA in fair-wage work environments from leather made in Ohio. When you buy one of his belts, you select the buckle of your choice (from an array of desirable options), then pick your size. We love the Choclitacious Leather Belt ($100) if you’re looking for a solid color that “will quickly mold to your shape.” But we dare you to resist one of his multi-colored, silk-screened “story” belts, such as the Connected Leather Belt. They combine the styles of comic book and graffiti art and will fast become your favorite, most talked-about fashion accessory. And if that isn’tmarni-wide-leather-belt-net-a-porter.jpg enough of a statement for you, try Iced Out’s LED Pink Belt Buckle (was $69.95; now $39.95). Framed in bling (with Austrian crystals), your custom message can be programmed to scroll the direction of your choice. Also colorful is Lucky Brand’s Peace Sign Fabric Patchwork Belt ($49.95 at Zappos). Okay, enough flash. Make your waistline the main attraction with the Marni Wide Leather Belt from Net-A-Porter ($288). We love its clean lines and simple design. Just as elegant but narrower, making it great for slacks, is the LTR Double Ring Belt by Pelle Melle ($110). And finally, we had to mention the 25 or so very pretty Betty Belts availabe at Essential Surf. Made in Bali, they feature cowry and other shells and hand-blown glass beads in a wide variety of styles. Get a little bit of everything, budget permitting.
