A New Guidebook to Finding Sneaky Charges, Hidden Fees
Here are some of Sullivan’s top tips:
- Never, ever miss a payment on a promotional no-interest loan. If you do, the lender will likely hit you with retroactive interest that can cost hundreds of dollars.
- Bite the bullet and research the fees involved in your retirement plan or 401(k), going so far as to discuss alternatives with your company’s HR department. Not being diligent in this department could force you to work an extra four or five years before retiring.
- Get it in writing: Especially when signing up for cell phone service, cable TV, gym memberships, or other things that require long- term commitments. Get something on paper that lists what your total payments will be after all taxes, fees, and service charges are applied.
- When traveling, understand that tourists rarely get a decent break. Wherever possible, find out what things ought to cost before you arrive, and always know your credit- and debit-card company’s policies before using them in a foreign country.
- Above all, don’t be afraid to call and/or write companies to insist on explanations for charges you think are errors. You’d be surprised how often you can get them fixed.
