For television addicts who have resisted the temptation to collect individual-season releases on disc, the latest trend in DVD packaging can be a boon: Starting with Sex and the City a couple of years ago and continuing with M*A*S*H and West Wing last Christmas, studios have collected individual packages into “complete series” mega-releases that usually offer a hefty discount over buying seasons individually. That’s a wonderful thing for gift-givers who want to impress their loved ones — especially considering the fact that there are further discounts online for many recent releases. Buying all the X-Files sets when first released, for instance, would have cost around $1,000; today the “Ultimate Collection” is a mere $230 at Amazon ($100 less than retail). Many of these sets boast clever (if sometimes frustrating) packaging, like the Alias mystery-box and the new Northern Exposure collection, which comes swaddled in a cozy faux-wool satchel. Others, like new retrospectives of Twin Peaks and the “squigglevision” cartoon Dr. Katz, are extremely welcome despite their comparably low-key packaging. Of course, the trick is to ensure that the recipient hasn’t already collected single-season releases along the way.
