Tunes both Parents and Kids can Love
Blogged under Music and CDs by Jennifer Hill on Friday 14 March 2008

Most new parents don’t realize how serious the lifestyle change can be from swinging single to responsible caregiver. But Mom and beatles-songs-for-kids-target.jpgDad can still rock out to cool tunes that are kid-friendly, too. In 1999, All You Need is Love: Beatles Songs for Kids ($12) was released. Performed by various artists, these are well-known tunes that you can happily sing along with. From the Martha Stewart empire, check out Martha Stewart Kids: Playtime ($12), an upbeat collection of songs from Elvis Costello and the Attractions to Nanci Griffith. At Landofnod.com, you can find the now-classic Newborn ($14) from Sara Hickman, which contains covers like Cat Stevens’ Moonshadow and originals including Lily, written for her daughter. At Pokeypup.com, hip parents will find everything they need for raising a cool kid, including a great selection of music. In their “Best CDs of 2007” the top pick was Gustafer Yellowgold’s Have You Never Been Yellow? DVD/CD Set ($16 on sale) featuring soulful pop tunes. Also hot for kids that (but you can enjoy them too) is anything by Dan Zanes or Joe McDermott. Their songs are written just for kids, but usually with interesting enough arrangements and melodies that parents will love them, too. For those 30-something parents who listened to They Might Be Giants in college, you’ll be happy to know that the alternative pop duo segued very nicely into music for children. They not only provide music for TV’s Higglytown Heroes, they also came out with Here Come the 1-2-3s ($15). To round out your family-friendly music library, give a listen to the Asylum Street Spankers’ Mama Says No ($12.49), If You Ever See an Owl ($13.98) by The Terrible Twos (the alter ego of The New Amsterdams frontman Matt Pryor) and the wide selection of world music compilations from Putamayo.
