Strictly Ballroom: You, Too, Can Learn to Dance
Blogged under Apparel, Costumes, DVDs, Hobbies and Crafts, Informational by Debi Martin on Thursday 10 April 2008

Was your man born with two left feet? You’ve got just enough time until the season of wedding party dances is upon us to teach him – and maybe yourself – how to move on the dancesport-ballgowns.jpgfloor with the greatest of ease. Chuck Reed’s How to Dance with Two Left Feet: A Comprehensive Guide to Real World Dancing ($60) offers hope to the rhythmically-challenged with simplified, sometimes humorous instruction on a three-disc DVD covers basics such as how to lead and how to find and follow the beat in the music. Direct your guy to How to Have More Social Success for  tips on the basics of dancing. The site, written by a self-described recovering socially inept awkward guy, says men need to know that they just have to be good enough to blend in with the crowd on the dance floor and not look like a dork. At Learning2Dance.com, you and yours can learn from a dance instruction video that timing really is everything in salsa, hiphop, ballroom, Latin, tango and more and will even make a custom DVD for you. Highly recommended is DanceTutor.com, because its instruction videos can be downloaded and watched frame-by-frame and in slow motion. A manual is still a good choice if you or your partner scored high in kindergarten on the “follows directions well” portion on your report card. The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Ballroom Dancing includes step-by-step photos that cover common ballroom dances and an instructional DVD ($17). Both you and your partner will feel like stepping out in official ballroom wear from DanceSport Ballgowns. For those who crave context, the dance manual section at Library of Congress includes much more than a history of social dancing in America. Video clips feature dancers in period costume performing dances like the Washington Post two-step against the backdrop of the Library’s Great Hall in the Jefferson Building.

Dr. Seuss Scores Again with “Horton Hears a Who”
Blogged under Books, Costumes, Toys and Games by Michele Chan Santos on Monday 17 March 2008

March has been a banner month for fans of Dr. Seuss and his clever, wildly creative children’s books. Many schools celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday (he was born March 2, 1904, and died in 1991), and then on hortonhearsawho11.jpgMarch 14, the animated movie Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who (pictured), starring the voices of Jim Carrey, Steve Carell and Carol Burnett, opened, drawing millions of children and their parents into movie theaters. If your child loved the movie, it’s a good time to introduce them to other Seuss volumes. A nice collection from Scholastic is Your Favorite Seuss: A Baker’s Dozen by the One and Only Dr. Seuss, which includes The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Sneetches and more ($34.95). A thoughtful gift for a young relative would be a membership in the Dr. Seuss Scholastic Book Club. Each member receives seven books, a tote bag and a copy of The Cat in the Hat for the introductory fee of $4.99 plus shipping. Each month, two different books are sent; if you choose to keep them, each book is $4.99 plus $3.99 for shipping and handling. Seussville, a web site run by Random House, has click-and-play games with characters from the books, a biography of Dr. Seuss, a catalog of his work and a listing of book-related events. Amazon.com has its own Dr. Seuss Shop, featuring a selection of Seuss titles. For babies, you can’t miss with a board-book copies of Dr. Seuss’ ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book! and Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? ($4.99 each). Other fun Seuss-related items available online are the Green Eggs and Ham Cookbook, by Georgeanne Brennan ($16.95), and a plush red-and-white top hat, like the one worn by the Cat in the Hat. You can wear it when you read bedtime stories to your children, after a dinner of green eggs and ham.

Wag Your Togs with All Creatures Great and Small
Blogged under Apparel, Boutiques, Costumes, Jewelry by Katherine Tanney on Sunday 9 March 2008

Being a fool for wienie dogs, I’m always on the lookout for dachshund-inspired objects and books, but my amazement at Fuzzy Nation Couture’s faux-crocodile red dachshund ($180, pictured), Burrberry chihuahua dachshund-bag-fuzzy-nation.jpg($59), and bronze pug ($140) handbags has led me to several wacky animal-inspired fashions. If you’re saying, “But what will I wear with those nutty handbags?” Fuzzy Nation also offers newsboy hats ($32) and brooches ($12) to complete your ensemble. Carnaval and Mardi Gras 2008 may be over, but Halloween costume parties can give you reason to wear Laurie Jacob’s Blowfish Bra ($250) from her Spiky Bras collection. The padded push-up bra is made of 100 percent breathable synthetic, and the designer promises that “proceeds from all sales will go to my eventual analysis.” Over at Etsy, artist Neile’s Butterfly Wing Jewelry combines fine silversmithing with an eye for design and a love of butterflies. “The butterflies I use are farmed all over the world, and harvested after their natural death. No butterflies are killed for my use,” Neile reassures, for guilt-free shopping. Also at Etsy, check out the Cool Kitten Skirts like this one ($43.95) by Koosi, an artist from the Netherlands, or this “seriously cool” one from Kinchi ($43). Cool? I don’t know about that, but they’re awfully cute if you’re into kittens. Whatever species you adore, go get your wacky animal groove on.

Belts From Boho-Chic to Bling
Blogged under Costumes, Shoes and Accessories by Katherine Tanney on Tuesday 15 January 2008

connected-leather-belt-jon-wye.jpgAnd you thought it was the jeans that mattered. Or the dress. If you’ve ransacked your wardrobe (and your friends’ closets) too many times in search of that perfect belt, then you ought to add some new looks to your collection. Belts are fun. Yes, they help hold up your pants and bring shape to loose dresses, but they also say a lot about your personality, not to mention enhance your curves or disguise your lack thereof. Jon Wye makes his belts in the USA in fair-wage work environments from leather made in Ohio. When you buy one of his belts, you select the buckle of your choice (from an array of desirable options), then pick your size. We love the Choclitacious Leather Belt ($100) if you’re looking for a solid color that “will quickly mold to your shape.” But we dare you to resist one of his multi-colored, silk-screened “story” belts, such as the Connected Leather Belt. They combine the styles of comic book and graffiti art and will fast become your favorite, most talked-about fashion accessory. And if that isn’tmarni-wide-leather-belt-net-a-porter.jpg enough of a statement for you, try Iced Out’s LED Pink Belt Buckle (was $69.95; now $39.95). Framed in bling (with Austrian crystals), your custom message can be programmed to scroll the direction of your choice. Also colorful is Lucky Brand’s Peace Sign Fabric Patchwork Belt ($49.95 at Zappos). Okay, enough flash. Make your waistline the main attraction with the Marni Wide Leather Belt from Net-A-Porter ($288). We love its clean lines and simple design. Just as elegant but narrower, making it great for slacks, is the LTR Double Ring Belt by Pelle Melle ($110). And finally, we had to mention the 25 or so very pretty Betty Belts availabe at Essential Surf. Made in Bali, they feature cowry and other shells and hand-blown glass beads in a wide variety of styles. Get a little bit of everything, budget permitting.

Never Underestimate the Power of a Princess
Blogged under Apparel, Costumes, Current Sales and Offers, Gifts, Tot Wear and Decor, Toys and Games by Michele Chan Santos on Thursday 15 November 2007

disney_giselle_nightgown.jpgThe new Disney movie Enchanted opens Nov. 21. In the film, a fairy-tale prince and princess find themselves in modern-day New York City, pursued by an evil queen. Because all the little girls who see the movie will no doubt want to transform into Princess Giselle, Disneystore.com has lost no time in creating products designed to thrill their smallest fans. A Giselle Enchanted Sleep Gown, complete with three layers of organza and satin skirts, and a panne bodice, can be hers for $34.50. Add to this a rhinestone tiara ($16.50) and an Enchanted pink velour robe ($39.50), and your kiddo is set to dream of her own kingdom. If your little one is a boy, Disneystore.com has interactive remote-controlled dueling pirate ships, based on the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End movie. The ships have lights and sound and cost $49.50. For adults (we think), there is an ornate and large (10” tall) Pirates of the Caribbean snowglobe. It has a secret drawer, swirls with black glitter and plays “Yo Ho, A Pirate’s Life for Me!’ It’s a good thing it does all that, because after paying $99.50 for it, you might feel like Captain Jack Sparrow just took all your gold.

Honey, Let’s Dress Up the Dog
Blogged under Boutiques, Costumes, Pets by Melissa Segrest on Wednesday 19 September 2007

dog_costume.jpgHalloween is just around the corner, so it’s not too early to start thinking about costumes. Not for you, or the kids, but for your pets. Notwithstanding the fact that most canines go berserk at the endless ringing of the doorbell on Halloween, there are so many unusual costumes to choose from on so many websites that we didn’t want you to wait any longer. For example, this snappy caterpillar costume works well with dachshund-shaped dogs. It’s from the pet boutique Trixie and Peanut. If your dog is slightly naughty, there is the French maid’s outfit at Doggy Duds.com. If the wild West is to your taste, try the Red Western Dog Dress with a little cowboy hat for your pug or Pekingese from Primp Your Pet, or the Elvis costume from Posh Pet Glamour Boutique. By the way, cat costumes are a little harder to find, since the typical cat is not inclined to be dressed like a fairy princess. However, we did find one adventurous site, Spoiled Rotten Kitties, which offers cat costumes. We recommend the Cat from Hell look.
