NBC’s Heroes returns for its third season on Sept. 22. One of the show’s stars is also an up-and-coming fashionista. Hayden Panettiere, who portrays cheerleader Claire, steps up to the hero role in real life with PanettiereCloset.com in which the actress sells off clothes straight from her closet, with proceeds going to her Save the Whales Again campaign. As Hayden says, “Cleaning out my closet is just the beginning; and putting my stuff up for sale is the first step in a crusade that will go a long way to helping these majestic mammals.”

In fact, Hayden just closed a moving sale, featuring furnishings from her family’s home. Every now and then, PanettiereCloset features an auction, most recently the Summer Breeze dress Hayden wore in her summer Candie’s photo shoot (it went for a cool $2,020).

There has been a pitched battle for Olympic gold going on 1,222 miles from Beijing this week, but it’s likely only aficionados or little girls have watched. The equestrian competition ended in Hong Kong with Germany coming out on top with three gold medals (the U.S. won two, including a gold). Anyone who watched the events marveled at the sheer strength, skill and hutzpah of horse and rider, but in case Michael Phelps and Nastia Liukin distracted you, there are lots of little girls who live and breathe horses. One person even attempts to decipher the riddle of why girls love horses on Yahoo!Answers. Now all these girls are going to need a horsey fix: If she’s around 6 to 8 years old, get her the “Fashion Angels” equestrian sketchbook ($15) from Toys’r'Us, or the Equestrian Challenge for PC for $20. If Barbie is her thing, the omnipresent doll has a complete equestrian outfit for $50 from etoys (if you want the horse and tack, that’s extra). There’s even a lovely book from the American Girls library, Girls and their Horses for $9. Mom, do you remember how much you loved horses? Maybe it was because of the classic movie National Velvet. Lest we forget that Jackie Kennedy made equestrian style chic, England’s Equestrianism.net maintains the standard. More recently, the O’Halloran Co. turned it into couture styling. (If you pay attention to fashion, you’ve noticed the riding boots that designers are churning out, such as Burberry’s $995 pair.) If the grown-ups have become enamored of dressage, this classy coffee table book shows you how to put the horsey into your home décor ($41). Finally, to make sure the holiday’s are just right, grab a Little Girl Riding Horse ornament from Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland for $6.

When Two Fat Ladies aired on PBS and the Food Network from 1997 to 1999, it was an unusual, droll take on the cooking show. Jennifer Paterson (right) and Clarissa Dickson Wright (left), the portly women of the title, traveled around Britain in a Triumph Thunderbird motorcycle and sidecar to prepare old-fashioned British meals for different sets of guests. The setting for each dinner was nearly as interesting as the food — Westminster Cathedral, an Irish convent and a safari park — and the ladies always made a point of collecting fresh ingredients from local farmers, fishermen, butchers and bakers. They often broke into song, glorified “streaky bacon” and cream, and joked about vegetarians. The series ended when Paterson died of lung cancer in 1999. All 24 episodes are now available on Two Fat Ladies: The Complete Series ($38), a two-disc DVD set that includes a tribute to Paterson. As for the recipes, they’re available in the cookbooks Cooking with the Two Fat Ladies (from $10.36, used and new on Amazon), The Two Fat Ladies Ride Again (from $2.50, used and new, on Amazon) and The Two Fat Ladies Full Throttle (used and new from $5.20). With the Olympics only two weeks away (Aug. 8 to 24, in Beijing), the world’s focus is on American swimmer Michael Phelps, who won six gold medals and two bronze medals during his last Olympic outing in Athens in 2004. For all things Phelps to show your support, SpeedoUSA is the place to start. Holy credit card, Batman! The Dark Knight sure does make you want to shop. The film, starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, scored the biggest opening in Hollywood history with $155 million. And while you may have already spent $10 on a movie ticket, there are superhero-sized amounts of Batman-inspired goods to keep the spirit of the movie alive. The official Warner Brothers Batman Store is a good place to begin. The general consensus is that Ledger steals the show as the Joker, so no doubt the black Joker T-shirt ($20) or the white “Why so serious?” Joker T ($20) is a good addition to any collection. A lunchbox with a Batman emblem is the perfect accessory for back to school ($14), while The Dark Knight limited-edition Batman bust ($66) or Joker statue ($165; pictured) could adorn the mantle of any comic-loving fan . At Target.com, fans can purchase The Dark Knight, a book featuring character sketches, director Christopher Nolan’s original shooting script and personal behind-the-scenes material created during filming ($27). Buzz is already growing for a possible Oscar nomination for the film’s music; pick up the movie’s soundtrack at Amazon ($13). Kmart offers fun Batman decor for youngsters. The Warner Brothers Batman rough bat valance ($12) goes perfectly with the Batman dark bat comforter ($25). Sweet superhero dreams!

Michael Tonello has been criss-crossing the country to promote his book, Bringing Home the Birkin: My Life in Hot Pursuit of the World’s Most Coveted Handbag. Squeeze this one into your summer reading list: It chronicles Tonello’s journey from New England based hairdresser/make-up artist to “Platinum Power Seller” on Ebay living in Barcelona. After moving to Spain for a job that falls through, Tonello turns to creative ways to pay rent. Eventually, he earns power seller status with Hermes products, specializing in the holy grail of purses: the Hermès Birkin bag, beloved by stars and socialites and virtually impossible to obtain through retail channels. A glance at eBay reveals asking prices from $14,000 to more than $55,000 (pictured is the elusive Hermès Rouge VIF Croc Birken with diamonds). BHTB is a fun romp and engaging memoir mixed with the allure of Hermès’ iconic bag. Tonello in person is a charming blend of Fred Astaire meets boy from New England. I visited with Tonello at a recent signing, and he told me about his plan to produce a line of men’s jewelry he’ll call His Inheritance (he wore a fabulous tourmaline ring he designed). He also plans to follow up his Birkin book success with a prequel detailing his adventures as a makeup artist/hairdresser. There may even be a series of children’s books based on the antics of his cats, Dali and Gala. After persuading him to read some of his favorite BHTB passages aloud, I went to bed with visions of Birkins dancing in my head.
