Still a Thrill: ‘In Cold Blood’
Blogged under Books, DVDs by Barbara Kessler on Thursday 30 March 2006

In Cold Blood.jpg

The Clutter family, their killers and author Truman Capote are no longer with us, but this book continues to holds its place as the quintessential non-fiction “psychological thriller.” And now that the movie Capote has revived interest in this fascinating study of two killers, In Cold Blood is appearing in new paperback and hardcover versions. For the best price, buy it at Amazon, where you can also get the DVD Capote for a better than average $17.96 (on the day we checked).

Classic and Comfy
Blogged under Furniture and Home Decor, House and Garden by Barbara Kessler on Wednesday 29 March 2006

The timeless look of the Adirondack chair lends grace to decks or patios anywhere, and its comfortable semi-recline remains ergonomically satisfying, even though it is cushionless. Keep it rustic in wood tones or dress it up in color by shopping the collection at Home Decorators, which offers the chairs in cherry, natural, blue, green and white finishes, and single-chair or loveseat versions. Made of Eucalyptus and other plantation grown hardwoods, these chairs are weather resistant, but more moderately priced than teak. Only catch: You’ll need to assemble them. But at least when you’re done, you’ll have a place to plop.

Kitchen Kitsch

You never know where you’ll find it, that just-so piece of whimsy. Here it is at Overstock.com, a Rita Rio ceramic kitchen set: salt and pepper shakers, spoon rest and a soap dispenser, $29.95, for the daring kitchenista! We like Overstock, a Shopperati partner, because their offerings are always changing and the deals can be terrific. But you may have to decide quickly when inventory is limited.

Crocs Rock

If your feet have had the honor of wearing these cushiony, colorful shoes, you’ll celebrate the expanding line, which this spring offers a flip-flop version, the Athens. The Athens, like the popular Croc Cayman clog, (both $29.99), comes in both adult and kids sizes in an array of beachy colors, like fuschia, lime green and turquoise. Crocs also now offer a turbo strap as a durable replacement for Croc clog styles. Shoes available online at The Croc Store, and at many department stores, such as Nordstrom and Dillards.

Proud of the Peacock? Say It with Style

NBC Universal has announced it will buy iVillage. Maybe they want to attract the site’s large audience of women to their newly expanded online store. This shop for all things related to NBC Universal, includes merchandise for popular shows such as Monk and Saturday Night Live, cable television shows, Universal Pictures and the Olympics. The SNL section features caps, mugs and DVDs of favorite hosts and cast members. You’ll find cool gift ideas such as apparel, games, collectibles, drink ware, as well as DVDs and CDs. The Torino Village Baseball Cap would look especially fetching on the slopes.

Spring Sass
Blogged under Apparel, Boutiques by Barbara Kessler on Wednesday 22 March 2006

Camis, spaghetti straps, empire waists, lace-up necklines, beads and gauze: It’s all in for spring, which is offering an assortment of fun styles evoking the ’60s, but with a modern refinement. If you can’t wait to slink into something sassy, check out the collections at the Standard Style Boutique. Their brand list is extensive and you can search the site with precision by brand or by style, for men and for women. We like this Ella Moss sleeveless top with a studded waist and shoulder ties ($119) (definitely for women!). Standard Style’s owners started in retail fashion in California, but opened their boutique in Kansas City in 2003. Missouri, the Third Coast?
