Nine oh-so-festive holiday place settings
Blogged under Holiday shopping, The Find by Diane Porter on Thursday 20 November 2008

You know how right before the Super Bowl, all the jocks and party-givers start thinking about buying a new television? A really, really big, expensive one with high def and picture-in-picture and all the bells and whistles? For a single football game?

OK. Now, focus. Thanksgiving is game day. It’s the big one. You’re the jock of the table, the duchess of all party-givers. And you need your big-screen TV: You need new dishes!  And while we love white too, what we want here is color, style and, well, high definition.

A site so sharp, you’ll have to shop and think
Blogged under A Site to Behold by Melissa Segrest on Thursday 20 November 2008

We’re not quite sure what TwentyThirtyForty.net aspires to. It’s definitely a site where you can buy things. They offer a sculpted Loeffler-Randall stand-up collar vest (above left), some Halston bangles from the ’70s (right) and a barely pleated purple Mason long-sleeved dress (above right).

But there is more to it, even though the site has only been around a few months, and the vibe is clearly “probably a bit cooler-than-thou.”

Three easy looks for T’day transition
Blogged under Holiday shopping, Wear It by Ashley Gilroy on Wednesday 19 November 2008

Already having a panic attack looking at your Thanksgiving to-do list? Scratch one thing off by wearing a dress that not only makes you look fabulous, but will last through the kitchen war zone. This way, you can go straight from cooking (or unwrapping store-bought pies) and arrive perfectly put together at the dining room table.

Here’s a fabulous start. This Thakoon design made its public debut when Michelle Obama wore it to the first presidential debate in Mississippi. The warm rose hues and rich creams made Obama appear calm, classy and inviting - just like you want to appear this Thanksgiving. The short sleeves make it easy to get around the kitchen, and the durable material and pretty print will not easily give way to food stains.

Create sweet drama with stunning desserts
Blogged under Holiday shopping, Live Pretty by Diane Porter on Wednesday 19 November 2008

We are thinking that the dessert table may be the perfect place to throw a party this holiday season. It can be its own affair entirely, and it doesn’t have to abide by rules for a meal. You can buy incredibly pretty dessert plates that don’t match anything else in the china closet. And you can serve exquisite desserts that say, as much as anything else, this is a truly special day.

Artful glasses for your holiday toast
Blogged under Holiday shopping, Live Pretty by Diane Porter on Tuesday 18 November 2008

There are wine glasses for sipping Chardonnay on the patio, and they can’t cost much or you wouldn’t take them outdoors. There are large wine glasses for when you’ve had a tough day at work, though we prefer to call them tumblers. And then there are wine glasses for the Thanksgiving table, which can be all exquisite shimmer and delicate shape.

Make that holiday toast to good health and thankfulness among your family and friends a beautiful one with some striking stemware.

Support your local chic boutiques
Blogged under Style News by Melissa Segrest on Tuesday 18 November 2008

We all know times are tough for retailers. Big stores like Saks, Neiman Marcus - even Target - are losing money. Even the promise of holiday shopping isn’t making anybody feel too comfortable.

So if the big boys are having trouble, what about that wonderful, independent, chic, beautiful boutique you love? It’s probably in real trouble.

A story in WWD today outlined in detail the problems small boutiques across the country, in big cities and small, are facing. The big stores are offering huge markdowns on designer goods that the little guys can’t match. Customers - even wealthy customers - are not buying as much, and they’re not willing to pay as much as they would have even six months ago.

Add to that a spike in the cost of European designer goods and it’s a disaster in the making. Independent boutiques are not able to stock their shelves as fully as before, and many are laying off employees or closing. People who are shopping now are mainly buying safe, classic items that will last for years, as opposed to zany or different items that help make that neighborhood boutique unique and fun.

So give your favorite local boutique a break and buy some holiday gifts there. You’re going to end up in the big box stores anyway. This way, you can do your part for the local economy and still look good in the end.

In our never-ending quest to keep you current on celebrity style, we have some updates on Hollywood’s hottest tot  - Suri Cruise. (That title is official, Forbes says so. Embrace your new frugality with great sales
Blogged under Clearance Rack by Diane Porter on Monday 17 November 2008

Let’s save some money. Let’s find cute things for less cash, and let’s dream a little on the way about the possibilities. Where are we going? The Clearance Rack, of course.

We’re beginning with a power suit. No one will dare turn down your budget request when you’re wearing Ann Taylor’s red Havilland short jacket ($130, was $218, left) and Havilland straight skirt. The jewel neckline and three-quarter sleeves are all business, in the smartest possible way ($80, was $108).
