An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
(No, it doesn’t.)
You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.
(If he’s thirsty, you can.)
Don’t wear white after Labor Day.
(Do, please do!)
The latter adage has been roundly poo-pooed for a while, although some women still think twice about popping on a pair of white pumps once the weather turns nippy (and that’s probably still smart). But there is plenty of white to be worn in fall and winter, so we’ve done a little shopping to get you over your fears.
SHIRTS
Let’s start with some fundamentals. Everyone can get their classic white tank and T-shirt (short and long-sleeved) from Hanes. There are lots of variations on the classic white button-down shirt, like one from Tory Burch with pockets, or the old-school traditional type from Brooks Brothers.
A lantern-sleeved style button-down ($68, pictured) from Ann Taylor is another way to keep white going well into winter.
Now that those essentials are out of the way, play around with the season’s styles. Marc Jacobs puts some ruffles on a silk shirt from Net-a-Porter, and Alice + Olivia has a ruffled and skinny-belted shirt (three trends in one!) for $275 from Saks Fifth Avenue.
Tory Burch has a cute stretch crepe white tunic in her fall collection, and Revolve Clothing has a stretchy V-neck with three-quarter sleeves for $74.
While it’s not quite a shirt, one of the season’s biggest fashion statements are vests, like this halter style from Forever 21 or the Loops from Yoox for $82.
PANTS
Let’s start with denim, because it’s what we’d rather be wearing most of the time. There are plenty of white skinny jeans on the shelves, like the Rich & Skinny sleek ones, and Tory Burch’s white flared jean for $175. The braided high-waisted white denims (pictured) by Alice + Olivia are on sale at Shopbop for $148.50
Incotex has a casual stretchy ankle-length pair at Yoox. Theory has a dressier but still casual pair at Revolve Clothing.
Another hot look this season is equestrian-style attire, which starts with those skinny riding pants, like a pair from Dolce & Gabbana (but we’re sure you can find less expensive ones aplenty).
If wider legged pants suit you, Ecoganik has a 100 percent organic cotton pair that looks very comfy for $114.
