Blogged under Apparel by Alison Maxwell on Wednesday 2 July 2008

Now you can show school spirit, all the way down to your underwear. Victoria’s Secret PINK, purveyor of all things sexy, has teamed up with 33 colleges via The Collegiate Licensing pink-collegiate-collection-boston-college-victoriassecret.jpgCompany to create an exclusive collection of college gear. The line, which includes hoodies, sweats, panties, T-shirts and totes, debuts this week in about 375 Victoria’s Secret stores. The collection is also available online at www.victoriassecret.com, through the traditional Victoria’s Secret catalog and via the new PINK magalog.  Pick up some sweats featuring your school — zipped hoodies are $52.50, while sweat pants are $44.50. Short-sleeved Ts run $24.50 as do tote bags. Each item features the PINK logo as well as the college logo. Choose from the following schools: University of Alabama, Arizona State University, University of Arkansas, Auburn University, University of California-Berkeley, Boston College, Clemson University, University of Colorado, Florida State University, University of Florida, University of Georgia, Harvard University, University of Illinois, University of Kansas, University of Kentucky, University of California-Los Angeles, Louisiana State University, University of Maryland, University of Miami, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, University of Nebraska, University of North Carolina, University of Oklahoma, University of Oregon, Penn State University, University of Southern California, University of South Carolina, University of Tennessee, Texas A&M, University of Texas, University of Washington and University of Wisconsin. ‘Stuff’ to Help You Remember Carlin
Blogged under DVDs, Books, Apparel by Alison Maxwell on Tuesday 1 July 2008

Funnyman George Carlin loved to talk about “stuff:” “That’s all you need in life, a little place for your stuff. That’s all your house is, a place to keep your carlin-napalm-and-silly-putty-booksamillion.gifstuff.” In memory of Carlin, who died June 22 of heart disease at age 71, here’s some “stuff” by which to remember him.  Do-it-yourself site CafePress.com features a wide selection of Carlin goods.  (Keep the kids away from this Web page, though, because Carlin’s famous “7 dirty words” make an appearance on some T-shirts). Among the standout items:  A “Will I ever stop asking rhetorical questions?” bumper sticker ($5) and a “George: You made us laugh. You made us think. We’ll miss you” fitted T-shirt ($25).  Some say Carlin, unlike many stand-up comics, transitioned easily from stage to written word. His book Brain Droppings spent 40 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List and includes such funny bits as “People Who Should be Phased Out,” and “Seven Things I’m Tired Of” ($7). Also available from the Carlin library:  Napalm and Silly Putty , which features bits like “The Ten Most Embarrassing Songs of All Time,” and “The 20th Century Hostility Scorecard” ($11).  In When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops? Carlin waxes poetic  (or vulgar, depending on how you look at it) about topics like the battle of the sexes, war and politics ($19). There’s no question that Carlin was most famous for his stand-up comedy.  In fact, Carlin hosted the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live on Oct. 11, 1975. Pick up the first season of the hit show here and  see him perform an opening monologue comparing football and baseball. The ultimate purchase for a diehard Carlin fan?  The George Carlin: All My Stuff DVD set, which features a 14-disc career retrospective, including all 12 of Carlin’s HBO specials ($180).

WALL-E Can Clean Up With Products
Blogged under Toys and Games, Tot Wear and Decor, Books, Apparel, New items by John DeFore on Monday 30 June 2008

Universal acclaim is greeting WALL-E, the daring new film from the Pixar animators who brought us Findingwall-e-playstation.jpg Nemo. And as with previous computer-hatched adventures The Incredibles and Cars (see the full collection here), programmers find this fable particularly well suited to video games. In the WALL-E game, which is available on all platforms, kids can go scavenger hunting for health-restoring sunbeams and forgotten cultural artifacts or just fly through space zapping debris. Games are just the tip of the product tie-in iceberg, of course, despite the fact that the movie’s theme is human overconsumption and the ecological damage done by limitless consumer goods: Kids seduced by the E.T.-like robot can buy either elaborate remote-controlled robo-toys or low-tech ones like this robotic arm; wall-e-masks-buycostumes.jpgthey can get themed bedspreads or read bedtime tales from a Little Golden Book. While this glut of goods may serve to cancel out the story’s eco-friendly message, marketers are expert at making adults feel joyless when the kids complain: After all, who could refuse a roomful of tykes wearing these (pictured) low-tech but heartstring-tugging WALL-E masks?

Swimsuit Cover-Ups for Every Figure
Blogged under Current Sales and Offers, Apparel by Debi Martin on Thursday 26 June 2008

Sure, it can stylishly match your swimsuit. And it’s functional when you want to wear something a little more appropriate for public viewing than just your swimsuit. But the true asha-tunic-instyleswimwear.jpgpurpose of the swimsuit cover-up, ladies, is to hide the parts of our bodies we are less confident about showing – and for many of us that means our entire bottom half. You can’t go wrong with a long sarong. Check out the clearance sale at mytiesarongs.com, including these solid color rayon sarongs ($10.95) in fuchsia pink, milk chocolate brown and royal blue, and these delicate, embroidered hibiscus flower sarongs ($30). If you want more coverage, consider this stylish (but expensive) maxi ($608) available in yellow, pink and light green. If it’s your tummy or torso that you want to camouflage, cover-up dresses by Diane von Furstenberg will surely make a splash: this one (on sale for $218) has small beads at the collar and embroidered circles at the hem, and this one ($164) has a modern starburst print and soft crochet detailing. The Asha string tunic ($122) ties in front, is made of rayon and has an olive stripe print. This knit beach dress ($68) is styled with an empire waist with adjustable drawstring and comes in yarn-dyed tonal solid black or mini gray or coral stripes. This colorful cover-up ($88) would work with a pink or white swimsuit, and it’s sheer, sexy and 100% silk. More modest is an over-sized caftan pullover (on sale for $39) with a tie-front keyhole neckline in textured mesh and cool cotton gauze. All-white is always all right, especially if the look resonates with summer trends as these two do: the UGG Australia Butterfly Beach Cover-Up with 3/4 kimona sleeves ($110) and this soft, airy linen number with gathers at the shoulders (on sale for $70), a tie belt with crochet loops and elbow-length sleeves.

Rock Right with Concert Gear
Blogged under Sporting Goods, Gadgets, Apparel, Outdoor Gear by Alison Maxwell on Thursday 26 June 2008

Like cookouts, sunbathing and vacations, live music is a staple of summer. Get into the groove this season with the best concert-going gear on the Web. If you’re lucky enough to score tickets to a venue that permits coolers or picnic baskets, try the coastal basket from Picnicbaskets.com ($100, with free shipping).  The basket igloo-playmates-icy-tunes-gripper.jpgincludes picnic supplies for four. Choose a gingham lining that’s red and white or blue and white. Igloo’s Playmate icy tunes gripper cooler (pictured) gets you jamming before the performer hits the stage ($66).  Hook up any MP3 player to this cooler, which is equipped with speakers and an amplifier. Stadium seating is often the norm for bigger-name acts like Bruce Springsteen or Coldplay. Keep your bottom comfy, while keeping your whistle, ahem, wet. The sippin seat has an internal flexible flask that holds 3 12 oz. cans worth of cold or warm beverages ($29).  Find your way back to your seat from the concession stand (or back to your car when the usher discovers your Sippin Seat) with this mini microbeam flashlight that attaches to any keychain ($20 each or 2 for $30). For those all-day outdoor gigs like Lollapalooza or Virgin Fest, sunscreen is a must.  MD Skincare’s SPF  30 individual towelettes are perfect for slipping into your bag and applying on the go (60 applications for $42).  Keep the sun out of your face and your head cool with one of the season’s trendy fedoras. This Spillane straw fedora from Urban Outfitters hits the right mix of cool and utilitarian ($28).  You never know when Mother Nature might unleash a thunderstorm.  Don’t be stuck scurrying for cover with thousands of fans : Be prepared with this stylish Marimekko “Ruusupuu” rain poncho ($75).  It comes with a small tote bag for easy storage.

We’re Just Wild About Milly
Blogged under Apparel by Laurie Montoya on Monday 23 June 2008

Michelle Smith (right) is the design force behind Milly, the women’s clothing line she launched in 2000. At 18, Michelle’s passion for fashion brought her to the Fashion Institute of Technologymichelle-smith.jpg in NYC where she also worked part time at Hermes. After graduating from FIT, Michelle Smith secured a Paris-based internship with Hermes while continuing her studies at the French design school, ESMOD. After internships with Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior three years later, she came back to milly-boho-halter-dress.jpgthe US determined to develop her own line. Combining flattering silhouettes, graphic prints and a vintage vibe, Milly clothing is beautifully made and fun to wear. We began our Milly shopping spree at Chickdowntown, where we found a wide variety of dresses, separates, bathing suits and tunics. Long patio dresses are a groovy statement this summer for a chic and pulled-together look at your neighbor’s barbecue. Choose among the long turquoise coin bead halter dress ($520), the coral beaded hostess dress ($495) or the retro peak-a-boo hostess dress ($383). If you’re not comfortable with the whole floor-length thing, you might prefer this boho halter dress ($446, pictured) or the equally fetching double ring dress ($342). Perhaps you’re more in need of a few separates to bring on vacation, in which case this cerise chain strap cami ($221) would be a great choice paired with these paisley metallic trim shorts ($207). The shorts could also do double duty worn with this white square neck tunic ($292), which could then be paired with this aqua mini skirt ($198). Milly fans on a smaller budget will want to click on over to Saks, where we found many pieces on sale, including this knit marine mini dress ($177), boatneck ripple sweater ($86) and drawstring dress ($168), all of which will have you looking stylishly nautical. Don’t forget the other brick and mortar etailers — Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Bergdorfs are all well stocked with enough Milly styles to see you though the summer and transition you into fall.
